“But the timber is the same in all of them,” Priya said.
“The timber is just the skin,” I said.
She laid the three pieces of paper out on the table. They were crisp and white and they were covered in numbers. They knew that the wind does not care about the aesthetics of the timber. The wind only cares about physics. It looks for the weakest point in the line. Usually, that point is a post that was installed by someone who was thinking about the price of a panel.

There is a certain satisfaction in a hole that is dug correctly. It is a clean cylinder in the earth. It represents a commitment to the future. When you fill that hole with a post and concrete, you are making a claim on the land. You are saying that this line will remain here regardless of the weather. It is a very old human impulse to mark a territory and to do it well.
I looked at the shoe I used to kill the spider. It had a thick rubber sole and a reinforced toe. It was a good shoe. It was built for impact and it was built to last. If it had been a flimsy slipper, the spider might have lived and my foot might have hurt.
We should build our fences like good shoes.
